The Island of Elba is connected all year round by departing ferries from the Port of Piombino (Piombino Marittima, in the province of Livorno) which in about an hour arrives at Portoferraio, the main port of the island, or to the smaller and less frequented ones Cable And Rio Marina.
Departures are frequent (every 15/30 minutes), especially in high season.
The shipping companies serving the island are:
- Tickets are conveniently purchasable online, up to one hour before departure. The ticket can be conveniently shown from your mobile phone, directly upon boarding. This way you will avoid queues and save time!
- It is advisable to consult the official websites of the companies for updated timetables and for any special offers and/or the website traghetti-elba.it to quickly check all availability and make a quick order price comparison of the various companies;
- I recommend purchasing tickets (especially those for vehicles) early advance, to ensure advantageous rates;
- Almost all accommodation facilities will be able to give you discount codes for the purchase of ferry tickets. If they don't provide them when booking, ask them 😉
- In summer the connections are very frequent, but they do not provide a 24 hour service: from Piombino the last departure is at 10.30pm, while from the island (Portoferraio) it is at 9.00pm;
- Your four-legged friends are welcome on the ferries: they must stay with you on the external decks, equipped with a leash;
- The Port of Piombino can be reached by car, but also directly train and in bus. The stops are located right in front of the ferry docks;
- It is also possible to leave your car directly at the Port of Piombino, without ferrying it. They are, in fact, available within the port area covered or uncovered guarded parking lots and even some free places.
